For those unfamiliar with our area, Wilton Manors is known as the "Island City" because it is completely surrounded by rivers and waterways. It is bordered by Ft Lauderdale and Oakland Park and has a population of just under 13,000. It is a city within a city and is in the middle of everything.
In recent years it has become more upper income, well educated and gay. The South Florida Business Journal estimates the gay population of Wilton Manors to be as high as 40%. It is one of only two cities in the US where a majority of City Council members are openly gay individuals.
Wilton Manors exceeds the national average for Single Households by 20%. Only 37% of households are "married" (the national average is 59%). only 52% of households have children (the national average is 72%). Wilton Manors had the highest number of households reporting as "unmarried partners" in the entire USA in the 2000 census.
The location could not be better. Wilton Manors is minutes from downtown Fort Lauderdale in one direction and the beach in another. It has great amenities, including a shopping and services. There is a tremendous variety of dining-out and nighttime entertainment options, all very nearby and a number of other new upscale condos and private homes.
Wilton Manors has great public schools, beautiful parks and its own library. The entire city brims with a palpable civic pride.
